Wegovy Weight Loss Program

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy this medication can aid with weight loss in diabetics and nondiabetics. It is a once-weekly injectable medication, belonging to a class of medications called GLP-1.

It is indicated for those who have:

  • BMI 30 or greater
  • 27 or greater in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia)

Semaglutide works by acting on the hypothalamus in the brain, which regulates our feeling of hunger. It also works by slowing down the motility of the gastrointestinal tract, keeping us feeling full longer.
Many patients begin to lose weight in the first week of taking semaglutide. We start the dose small, and titrate up every 4 weeks. This is done to gently introduce the medication to the body and minimize any possible side effects.
Some people experience mild side effects and those are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, hypoglycemia, feeling bloated or heartburn.
Those who should not use semaglutide are:

  • Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
  • Personal or family history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant
